Preserving Maritime Traditions at the Boat Museum

The Northern Norwegian Boat Museum

The Northern Norwegian Boat Museum in Gratangen is a treasure trove of coastal history. Here, visitors can explore an impressive collection of traditional boats, including the iconic Nordland boat, known for its high stem and sleek design. These boats were once the fastest on the water, capable of reaching speeds of 5–6 knots with oars and nearly 20 knots under sail. The museum offers a rare glimpse into the craftsmanship of boat builders, with boats on display dating back to the 18th century, including a massive ‘fembøring’ boat from 1825, complete with its towering mast and removable cabin.

The museum's collection extends beyond boats. Visitors can marvel at coastal artifacts, such as a Lofoten chest designed to carry essential supplies for fishermen, and nets that were tanned to prevent them from rotting. These relics tell the story of a hard-working community deeply connected to the sea, where survival relied on the careful preservation of both tools and traditions.

The end of the Nordland boat era

By the early 20th century, the advent of engine-powered fishing boats marked the decline of the Nordland boat. With the ability to carry more cargo and operate more efficiently, these new vessels gradually replaced traditional boats, which had once been the lifeblood of coastal communities. Today, the sound of small fishing boat engines has become a familiar background in these bustling coastal regions, but the heritage of the Nordland boat lives on through museums like the one in Gratangen.

Traditional boat restoration keeping heritage alive

Just a few kilometers from the museum, the Northern Norwegian Ship Preservation Centre continues the tradition of boat restoration. Using time-honored techniques, skilled craftsmen at this center repair and restore old boats, ensuring that the knowledge and skills passed down through generations are not lost. Visitors are welcome to tour the center and witness the meticulous work that goes into reviving these historical vessels, preserving not just the boats but the stories of the people who once sailed them.

Foldvik Brygger

For a deeper connection to Gratangen’s coastal culture, a visit to Foldvik Brygger is a must. This historic site, situated by the fjord, is a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. It hosts several events throughout the year, including the Foldvik Market and Coastal Culture Festiva. In addition, the Christmas market in December adds a festive touch to the area's vibrant cultural calendar.

Visitors can enjoy local seafood, homemade meals, and the cozy atmosphere of the old shop, which has served many functions throughout its history, from a telegraph office to a social hub.

The site’s rich history is evident in its architecture, including the traditional Nothjell, a tall post construction with a pitched roof, designed as a drying rack for large spinning nets made of cotton. The structure allows the nets to hang freely under the barrier roof, protected from rain and weather. Nothjeller, often described as "cathedrals of the coast," were once a common sight along the Norwegian coastline. Today, however, they are a rarity and represent an important part of Gratangen’s cultural heritage.

Foldvik Brygger also offers visitors the chance to experience traditional fishing up close. The surrounding waters are teeming with fish, making it a prime location for sea fishing enthusiasts. Whether you're seeking cod, haddock, or halibut, the fjord's waters provide an abundant playground for anglers.
